We don’t care what’s in your data. And that’s a good thing.
It might sound strange. Because you’d think: as a hosting provider, we should be interested in your data, right? Nope. What we do care about is that your data is stored securely and always available to you. And that you decide who can access it. Whether it’s for your website, your personal photo album, or your SaaS — it’s your data, and it stays that way.
It used to be simple. And honestly, we still think it should be.
Your data is your data, right? It used to be much simpler. You had a photo album. It was somewhere in a cabinet. And that was it. You knew exactly where it was. Or better said: you knew it was at home. Because finding that one photo you really want to see can be tricky in a physical photo album. But at least it was at your home. Your photos, your privacy, your control. No one could misuse it.
We stick to that idea. With a hosting package and Piwigo, you can bring your photo album online. We do nothing more than keep the server and your selected service running. Your data is stored in Dronten, and we make backups to Meppel. All within the Netherlands. No data extraction. No surprises.
You decide who gets access. And us? We stay out of it.
Our business model? You pay. And that’s the whole story.
We make our money from the services you pay for. And we price them to cover our costs, so we don’t need to do strange things like ask for a usage license on your data. That’s not interesting to us. We keep your data available, safe, and reliable.
Even for future free services (hint): we don’t use your data for anything. No data licenses. No backdoors. In such cases, we use a freemium model: the free version is truly free without giving away your data. The cost of the free services is covered by our paying customers.
Sharing a file = granting a license
You’d think that if you pay WeTransfer to share files, those files would remain yours. Your data stays yours. But that’s not the case. Because they’re allowed to use your data to develop new services. Even if you pay. It’s absurd. Those attachments can contain sensitive information, and you really don’t want that being used. Imagine an AI model leaking your private info. Or worse, your data ends up somewhere on the internet. Because they’re allowed to use it for their service. And they even ask for a user license — even though you may not have the rights to grant one. Also good to know: they run on U.S. cloud infrastructure. They might say your data is stored in Europe, but it’s still controlled by an American company. And they have access to Europe.
At Yourwebhoster.eu, we’ll never use your data to improve our platform. That’s not our model, and we’re simply not interested in doing that. Your data is yours, and we don’t care about its contents. What we *do* care about is that it’s securely stored with us and accessible to you — exactly as promised. Plus, we’re nerds. Imagine managing an exabyte of storage (a bit over one million GB, or 536 billion photos) — now *that’s* exciting. A single family snapshot in the Alps? Not so much.
Data ≠ Data
In this blog, we’re talking about the data *you* upload to our services. We do process some information about you, like your billing address. We also track how much storage and traffic you use, so we can notify you when you’re close to your limit.
We also monitor whether your service still fits your needs. For example, if you have a website and you’re out of space, we can advise you to clean up or upgrade. Otherwise, your website might suddenly stop working. On a managed server, we can notify you if your CPU is overloaded and might impact your application’s performance. More specific metrics are always discussed in advance. These are technical figures strictly necessary to provide you with good service — not to improve our platform.
